2014 Cowanesque Valley vs. Towanda Boys TennisCowanesque Valley won their first NTL boys' tennis title in 29 years by splitting with Towanda in a double header Friday.

The Indians lost the first match 4-3 then won the second match 4-3 to clinch their first title since 1989.

"This certainly has been something we have been striving for in the three years I've been at CV," Cowanesque coach Mark Haviland said. "We almost let it slip away tonight, losing the two doubles matches in the first match. I'm really proud of the boys and their effort and my seniors especially."

CV needed to win one to clinch the title while a Towanda sweep gave them the title.

In the first match Towanda's Dave Rodenhizer defeated CV's Chandler Mastin 6-3, 6-1 at first singles. CV's Brian Fulmer beat Christian Thomason at second singles 6-1, 6-3 to even things up.

At third singles Towanda's Dawson Wright beat Cameron Lewis 6-4, 6-4 followed by the Indians winning the final two singles matches.

Skyler Schmidt won over Matt McNeal 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 at fourth singles while Nathan Pickering beat Anthony Vogel 6-0, 6-4, giving CV a 3-2 edge going into doubles.

But that's where they faltered as Towanda took both.

At first doubles Rodenhizer and Wright beat Mastin and Fulmer 6-0, 4-6, 11-9 while at second doubles Thomason and McNeal defeated Lewis and Schmidt 0-6, 6-4, 10-4.

The singles matches in the second match followed the first.

Rodenhizer beat Mastin 6-1, 6-1, Fulmer defeated Wright 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, Thomason beat Lewis 6-2, 6-3, Schmidt won over McNeal 7-5, 6-1 and Pickering topped Vogel 6-0, 6-3.

However, CV's first doubles team of Mastin and Fulmer got revenge on Rodenhizer and Thomason to the tune of 6-1, 6-4 to secure the win.

Towanda won second doubles as Wright and McNeal beat Pickering and Jamie Colvin 6-2, 6-3.

The Indians finish the season 13-3 and 7-1 in the NTL while Towanda is 9-6 and 6-2 in the league. The Knights host Wellsboro Monday.

CV will now look towards the team District IV tournament next Tuesday, where they hope to keep their run going.

"Their third goal of the season is to win to the third round of districts," said Haviland.
